IF YOU HEARD WHAT ADAM HEARD
ADAM SHARES THE STORY OF HIS GRANDMOTHER, SARAH LEIBOVITZ EIZAK, WHO WAS THE YOUNGEST OF NINE CHILDREN. HER MOTHER WAS A SINGLE MOTHER AND SARAH WANTED TO HELP PROVIDE FOR THE FAMILY, SO SHE MOVED TO BUDAPEST FROM LIPSHE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA AS A YOUNG TEENAGER SO SHE COULD WORK AS A NANNY. SHE SPENT PASSOVER, 1944, WITH SOME FRIENDS AND WHEN SHE RETURNED TO THE HOUSE SHE’D BEEN NANNYING FOR, THE HOUSE WAS SEALED, AND THE FAMILY WAS TAKEN BY THE NAZIS. NOT LONG AFTER, SHE WAS ROUNDED UP WITH SEVERAL OTHER YOUNG JEWS IN THE TOWN, AND SHE WAS SENT INTO FORCED LABOR, AND THEN BERGEN-BELSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP, FORCED TO SURVIVE THROUGH UNIMAGINABLE CIRCUMSTANCES. THE BRITISH LIBERATED BERGEN-BELSEN IN APRIL, 1945, AND SHE MIRACULOUSLY REUNITED WITH HER BROTHER MOSHE, WHO WAS SERVING IN THE JEWISH BRIGADE OF THE BRITISH ARMY. AFTER A BRIEF REUNION, SARAH IMMIGRATED TO ISRAEL, WHERE MOSHE SAID HE WOULD MEET HER. THE SHIP SHE WAS ON WAS INTERCEPTED BY THE BRITISH, AND SARAH, WHO HAD ONLY BEEN LIBERATED SHORTLY BEFORE, WAS PUT INTO A DETENTION CAMP. MOSHE FOUND HER AND WAS ABLE TO SECURE HER RELEASE. TOGETHER THEY REBUILT THEIR LIVES IN A NEW COUNTRY. SARAH JOINED THE ISRAELI ARMY, AND NOT LONG AFTER SHE MET THE MAN WHO WOULD BECOME HER HUSBAND, ALSO A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR, AND TOGETHER THEY BUILT A BEAUTIFUL LIFE AND FAMILY IN ISRAEL.
IF YOU HEARD WHAT ADAM HEARD, YOU WOULD NEVER FORGET.
